Why the Ang Dating Daan Group Condemns GMA Network’s Re-Airing of Episode Maligning Bro. Eli
Bloggers are united in condemning the re-airing by GMA Network of a Case Unclosed episode that features the controversial interview by Arnold Clavio of the self-confessed serial rapist who then filed an invented case of rape against Bro Eli Soriano.
The documentary made by Case Unclosed program of GMA 7 was first aired in 2009. Surprisingly in 2011, it was re-aired on August 3, on GMA News TV.
One of these bloggers, Standupper.wordpress.com’s Robert Bolisay, pinpointed the holes in the accuracy in airing the controversial episode highlighting the invented case of rape against Bro Eli Soriano. He suggested that GMA Network could have looked closely at the whys of the re-filing and why the same was suspicious.
Standupper explained some few reasons why the Ang Dating Daan is boycotting GMA News and its parent company GMA Network.
Like Bolisay, other bloggers are convinced that when the Case Unclosed aired the controversial interview of Veridiano speaking all negatives against the ADD leader, there was no attempt made by host Arnold Clavio to conduct a background check about Veridiano. A simple check on Youtube will reveal search results that Veridiano made a video confessing that he raped nine (9) of his subordinates when he was then a member of the Ang Dating Daan group. Veridiano was expelled for various offenses, including malversation of Church funds and for raping underage boys.
Upon defecting to the Iglesia ni Cristo, Veridiano appeared one day and filed an invented charge of rape against Bro Eli. But the said case was already dismissed by the Pampanga court, citing the lack of evidence to indict the international evangelist. However, through the influence of the Iglesia ni Cristo to the then president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, the case was re-filed through the then Secretary of Justice Raul Gonzales.
To recall, the Ang Dating Daan group in 2009 led a signature campaign to boycott the television network for its haphazard reporting of the said case. This time around, Ang Dating Daan looks like its sustained boycott will be upheld until GMA Network and its company, GMA News TV issues an apology to its victim, Bro Eli Soriano.
The blog also scored GMA for acting as host to try by publicity the victim, Bro Eli Soriano, saying:
Being a giant network, it is not fitting to think that GMA-7 is in the dark about certain rules of court that makes the episode unfair and biased to be aired and re-aired.
The “why?” question should have been directed to GMA-7 instead. Why did you broadcast the episode? Are you not aware of the rule of court on sub judice?
The TV Network tried to sound fair when they said that they tried to get the side of the respondent. They did not get anything, however, from the respondent.
Here is another “why?” question for GMA-7. Why would they still insist on an interview with the respondent? Didn’t they know they cannot discuss the case on the basis of sub judice?
In the Case Unclosed format, it is inevitable not to talk about the merits of the case once Bro. Eli grants an interview.
Of course, the respondent would mention some details of the case to defend himself. If not, what did you expect to talk about in the interview then?
From the point of view of Standupper, the Ang Dating Daan members, who are citizens of a democratic nation like the Philippines, could have used the streets to peacefully protest against GMA 7 “in accordance with Batas Pambansa Bilang 880,” about the free exercise by citizens to assemble and petition the government and for other purposes. Ang Dating Daan, however, took the social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter, instead. A boycott page was now garnering 12,000 likes as this 11 PM today (09/18) from 6,000 likes as of Friday (09/16).
